accreditation of health care organizations in India, National Accreditation Board for Hospitals
and Health Care Providers (NABH) was started by the Quality Council of India.
In addition to formal accreditation system Ananth’s Directory of Health Services and CRISIL
have started rating services of hospitals location wise and specialty wise to give an opinion on the
relative quality of healthcare, delivered by the institution viz. nursing homes, specialty secondary
care hospitals, single specialty and multi specialty tertiary care hospitals. Importance of Accreditation 9 Regulation of Hospitals: 1. ISO 9001-2000 is the most widely accepted system of quality management all over the
world which defines the Quality Management System, resource management, management
responsibilities, product/service validation and internal audits.
2. The NABH accreditation can be acquired after scrutiny under 10 heads: 3. JCI accreditation process takes longer duration ~2 years or more. It lays down standards for
ambulatory care, care continuum, clinical laboratory, disease or condition specific standards
and hospital standards.
This accreditation is valid for 3 years. Regulation of Pathology and Diagnostic Laboratories: Besides ISO and NABH, NABL (National Accreditation Board for Laboratories) also gives
gradings. Regulation of Medical Equipment: US FDA monitors the safety of all regulated medical devices.
CE Marking certifies that the product has met EU consumer safety, health or environmental
Central Drug Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) lays down rules, standards and approves
import and manufacturing of drugs, diagnostics, devices.
