A solution containing 400 mg of a 1:1 mixture (by weight) of fluorene and 9-fluorenone in 0.5 mL of petroleum ether has been pre-made for your use. Load 0.5 mL of this solution onto the column by carefully transferring it with a Pasteur pipet directly to the top of the column. Be careful not to disrupt the column bed while adding the sample. Open the stopcock until the top of the liquid level is at the top of the alumina. Again, never allow the liquid level to drain below the top of the alumina. When the liquid level reaches the top of the alumina, close the stopcock. Add approximately 1 mL of fresh petroleum ether to the top of the column. Be careful not to disrupt the column bed while adding the eluent. Re-open the stopcock to allow the liquid to drain down to the top of the alumina, then close the stopcock again.
