For many people who hav e nev er heard about the idea, mandatory v oting sounds v ery strict: requiring people to go to the polls on Election Day . In the United States, it seems strange to present an action many consider a right as a required duty . Nev ertheless, in many foreign countries, mandatory v oting (sometimes referred to as compulsory v oting) is an obv ious democratic option. The sy stem in fact is present in more than 30 democracies around the world. Howev er, all policies are not the same. Mandatory v oting can be used to elect all political representativ es or it can be restricted to specific elections. For example, in France, mandatory v oting is only used for Senatorial elections. The two most notable examples of compulsory v oting occur in Belgium and Australia. Belgium has the oldest tradition of compulsory v oting sy stem. The sy stem was introduced in 1 892 for men and 1 949 for women. Today ,
