Samantha Jordan 110 UCWR A devoted leader like Leonardo, authoritative role model like Raphael, a free spirit resembling Michelangelo, and an intellectual such as Donatello can all be seen within writers. No, I’m not referring to the four Italian Renaissance artists; I am referring to the 1980’s cartoon The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT). The TMNT have strong characteristics that allow them to make mythical New York City a better place. Similarly writers, of all types, are here to make us better people, whether they do so through poems, plays, essays, songs, fiction, or non-fiction. The TMNT are a huge part of New York just as writers are a huge part of society. Leonardo is seen as a strong and decisive leader who is willing to step up and take chances, just as the founders of English Literature did, such as Chaucer and Shakespeare. While Leonardo took risks while fighting, Chaucer took risks in his writing, namely The Canterbury Tales . The story was written as a poem, which would be difficult regardless of the time period. Also, the stories Chaucer incorporated within The Canterbury Tales pushed the limits of what was acceptable in literature within the fourteenth century. Examples of these stories are the Knight’s tale, which was about love mixed with bitter hatred resulting in death and misery, and the Wife of Bath’s tale, which centered on
