Knut Hamsun (1859-1952)He was born in central Norway in an area called Lom, Gudbrandsdal (“dal” =valley in Norwegian). Born to a poor family, 4thof 7 children. Born with the Knut Pedersen, Hamsund was the name of the farm where he lived and he tacked this onto his own, an editor misspelled his named and forgot the “d” and he liked that so kept it. At the age of 3, his family moved up North to the area of Nordland. When he was 9, he was separated from his family. They sent him to live with his Uncle Hans Olsen to help him in his postage shop. He did not like his Uncle because he mistreated him and beat him. At age 15 he got confirmed and he left and went back to Lom and he worked many odd jobs: store clerk, sheriff’s assistant, elementary teacher, etc. He began to experiment with writing and got a shop keeper called Erasmus Zahl to support him and give him money to pursue his writing career; this only lasted for about a year.
