Cliff Hults Partner: Lizzy Robinson Date started-completed: 1/14/05-1/27/05 Using Gas Burners and Filtration Purpose: To learn how to use and work gas burners and their parts. Filter out sand and salt from a water solution using a funnel, filter paper, ring stand, evaporating dish, and burner. Apparatus Gas Burner and Materials: Sparker Wire Gauze Forceps Evaporating Dish Copper Wire Ring Stand Iron Ring Funnel Filter Paper – 1.1g 2 Beakers, 250mL Wash Bottle Stirring Rod Salt – 3g Sand – 3g Procedure: 1. Put on safety equipment 2. Pick up required apparatuses and materials 3. Partially close air ports 4. Control height of flame 5. Close the air ports 6. Heat the evaporating dish 7. Light the flame 8. Adjust gas till flame is about 8cm high 9. Insert 10cm of copper wire into the flame just above the barrel 10. Support a funnel on a ring stand with the stem of the funnel just touching the inside wall of the beaker. 11. Use beaker to collect filtrate
