When we record from single neuron from the PFC in a monkey, they continue to be active even when no stimulus, which is different than what is happening in the rest of the brain -- where when the stimulus is off, it may stop firing. Working Memory! Functional Specialization within the Lateral Prefrontal Cortex! Content-Based Accounts! Different components of working memory are segregated by the content of the stimuli, e.g., spatial versus non-spatial ! In terms of the human work that has been done, it has been observed that the PFC seems to be functionally specialized for different aspects of working memory. And generally they are talking about the dlpfc and vlpfc (both active in human brain during delay). Some say the differences are based on the differences in content that is being keep online -the dlpfc is important for keeping spatial locations in mind, whereas the vlpfc is important for keeping verbal info online. This would go along w/ the what and where pathway of the visual system that we looked at earlier. And so it makes sense that the PFC may be organized in the same way. An alternative to this (content-based account) is the process based accounts. Working Memory! Functional Specialization within the Lateral Prefrontal Cortex! Process-Based Accounts! Different components of working memory are segregated by the type of processing required for a particular task, e.g., ! maintenance versus manipulation! The n-back task! The process based accounts is an alternative theory to the content-based accounts. It suggests that the specialized within working memory have more to with the types of processes that are being carried out, and not so much with the content. It doesn't distinguish between where spatial info or verbal info is going to be processed in the PFC, but determines is exactly what are you doing w/ this info. Most seen in working memory tasks.
