Matt Staten Loren Davis Anthropology 430 29 January 2008 Article Summary – Week 4 Kathleen Byrd’s “Subsistence Strategies in Coastal Ecuador” is her attempt to prove that although a group of people may have the same material culture, their subsistence patterns can vary greatly. Specifically, Byrd references five different archaeological sites to prove that subsistence strategy is impacted more by environmental setting than material culture. Byrd’s introduction is somewhat lacking in background information. She does not cite a reason for her study, only to prove what is mentioned above. That being said, common sense dictates that there must have been a need for this article, otherwise it wouldn’t have been written. The study focuses on bone components collected during archaeological excavation at four sites: Loma Alta, Real Alto, OGSE-62, and Valdivia. The materials from Real Alto have been split into two time groups: the Middle Valdivia and Late Valdivia (date ranges not provided).

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
