Simplifying Expressions MAT 221: Introduction to Algebra March 17, 2013 Simplifying Expressions Throughout this paper I will be identifying how to simplify expressions in three different problems. These problems are 2a(a – 5) + 4(a – 5), 2w – 3 + 3(w – 4) – 5(w – 6), and 0.05(0.3m + 35n) – 0.8(-0.09n – 22m). Throughout each problem I will identify the steps used to complete them, evaluating what properties are used to accomplish each step as well as a brief explanation. The use and understanding of real number in these equations is important to understand because
they help you simplify the equation. While knowing what the use of expressions is important, the more basic mathematical knowledge is also important because it allows you to break into the problem and help reduce it to the lowest terms. Starting with the first problem: 2a(a – 5) + 4(a – 5) 2a(a – 5) + 4(a – 5) = 2a(a) 2a(5) + 4(a) + 4(5) = 2(aa) – 2a(5) + 4(a) + 4(5) = 2(aa) – 2(5)a + 4(a) + 4(5) = 2(aa) – (2*5)a + 4(a) + 4(5) = 2a 2 10a + 4a + 20 = 2a 2 6a + 20 In this problem you can see that on the left hand side I stated the given problem of 2a(a – 5) + 4(a – 5), on the right hand side of the equation I gave the break down in how I was able to
