James Anders Geography 101 Final Essay Question 2 Humans have been facing all the hardships civilization and life can throw at them throughout history. There are many challenges but I believe that natural disasters and the competition for scarce resources are the two most significant. These can potentially lead to other challenges. Webster says that natural disasters are any events or forces of nature that have a catastrophic effect on humans and nature. Mississippi was hit by Hurricane Katrina last year and everything in its path was destroyed. Not only did the hurricane destroy the homes and businesses that were in the way but trees were knocked down and the ocean surge damaged the soil for miles inland. Tornados ravaged central Georgia and southern Alabama earlier this year. Schools were knocked to the ground and shutdown, crops were torn from the ground, and many houses were completely destroyed by the fierce winds. Many people were without power and shelter for weeks.
