Industry Situation and Company Plans Industry Situation: The search engine industry has been growing at an exponential rate since the inception of the internet. There are no signs that growth is slowing down, although there are three major concerns that search engines, specifically Google, must deal with soon or are dealing with as this is written. The first is censorship, the second is privacy, and the third is net neutrality. Censorship is a primary concern in the east, particularly China and the Middle East. Privacy is more of global issue, and with identity theft and phishing on the rise, it is just as important as it has ever been. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, net neutrality legislation in the US and abroad is threatening the very freedom that makes internet great. In his letter to the stockholders, Larry Page directly addresses the issue of censorship in China. Google was very concerned with not having an entry in the Chinese market, which is the biggest on the earth. Chinese users were unable to access the Google.com website due to government restrictions, so the only way for Google to enter into that market was host its service in mainland China and accept government censorship regulations. The new site, Google.cn, is exactly the same as its International counterpart except that certain search terms are censored. For example, a search for “Tiananmen Square” will return current information
