Background to Dumb Cuts 7 May 2013 Australia, the most expensive universities in the world Last year the National Union of Students (NUS) slammed recommendations to increase student fees and decrease public funding for Universities, despite the name of the report being ‘Graduate Winners’. “This report was a slap in the face of anyone aiming for an inclusive, accessible and empowering tertiary education system,” said NUS President Donherra Walmsley. Are Australian universities really that expensive? Recently Forbes magazine published a statement about the rising costs of university with the median cost of a public education in the U.S. ($4,587) being second only to Australia ($5,289) in 2003­2004. Now the Aussie dollar is doing well, Australia is a very appealing place for overseas residents to study ­ but are the fees fair on these students?
