Cailin Johnson-Smart January 29 th , 2008 Chemistry 1M Ex #2 Determination of the Empirical Formula of Magnesium Oxide Abstract: The empirical formula of Magnesium Oxide was determined by calculating the mass of the magnesium ribbon after it turned to powder after exposed in the crucible over a burner. The total mass of the product formed was 0.71g and the mass of 0 incorporated was 0.28g. The empirical formula by the oxidie is Mg 1.06 O 1 Results: Mass of Mg metal used 0.4329g Theoretical yield of MgO from reaction Mg(s) + 1/2O 2 (g) MgO(s) 0.718g MgO Mass of Oxide formed 0.718g Mass of O incorporated 0.2779g Empirical formula of the oxide Mg 1.06 O 1.0 Percent by mass of Mg and O in the oxide 60.9% Mg and 39.1% O Percent yield of Mg + 1/2O 2 MgO (actual yield/theoretical yield) X 100% 99% Sample calculations: See list in data analysis section Discussion/Conclusion: After recording the mass of the crucible and lid they were fired under the burner. The initial mass of the crucible and lid after heating was found to be 18.25g. After placing the magnesium ribbon
