Metabolism Metabolism  – series of chemical (enzymatic) reactions  that are essential for life All living things engage in metabolic activity Metabolic processes generally involve consuming  oxygen  while breaking down  glucose  to obtain energy,  leaving byproducts of  carbon dioxide  and  water Gasses involved in metabolism enter and leave cells  through simple  diffusion
