Unformatted text preview: 1 Mr. Scherer English 102-04 10 March 2008 A Prcis of Katherine Anne Porters He The Whipples are a poor farm family that has a difficult time supporting three children, one of whom is mentally challenged and Mrs. Whipples favorite. The mentally challenged child, simply referred to as He, is Mrs. Whipples favorite, and she often boasts that fact to neighbors. Unlike Mrs. Whipples other two children, Emly and Adna, He never gets hurt and doesnt complain. Even though Mrs. Whipple believes He is as able as any other child, she still fears something may happen to Him. Additionally, she fears neighbors opinions of her and her treatment of Him. Early in the fall, Mrs. Whipple receives a letter from her brother notifying her that he plans to be visit with his family. Wishing to impress her relatives, she decides to butcher a valuable suckling pig. Mr. Whipple, however, protests arguing that the pig could be sold for profit at Christmas. Nevertheless, Mrs. Whipple sends Him to capture the pig and slices its throat profit at Christmas....
