(Photos courtesy of Freight Car of America) sector.6 To further emphasize this application, FreightCar America, a builder of rail cars, recently celebrated the delivery of the 100,000th aluminum car in a ceremony with its customer in December, 2006.7 Figure 1 shows a line of open-top, hopper cars for hauling coal made using aluminum plate and extrusions. The use of aluminum in coal freight cars is only one of many freight applications. Aluminum cars are used to transport a variety of metal ores and minerals from mine to market. In all these applications the high specific strength (strength to weight ratio) of aluminum enables increased payload and fuel savings.
