You are taken from your mother and are put in a cramped cage with no way out. Sadness and anxiety creep in as you feel trapped with no escape and the misery is all consuming. You are in tight living quarters and you are hungry and thirsty. You see how others are treated around you and live in a constant state of fear. This is the painful reality experienced by animals every day at factory farms. There were many events that led up to factory farming. However, it really started to emerge in the 1960’s when animal products were highly demanded and fast food restaurants became more popular. The need for efficiency had to become important for a growing population that demanded meat. In some states AG-AG laws have been put in place to prohibit distribution of any type of media on factory farms. Everything is hidden because the owners know the public would be outraged. Recently, more media has come out from workers that are undercover to expose this industry. Their eyes often speak of sadness and frustration that stems from a life without sun, fresh air, friends, and natural stimuli.” 2 There are many more animals that are experiencing this than pigs. They live in darkness and don’t get to experience the outside world where they are able to live freely. Animals confined in tight spaces with a lot of others can be prone to reacting in unnatural behaviors. Because of this pigs teeth are chipped and chickens beaks cut off without any pain killers. “There is no characteristic, or reasonably small set of characteristics, that sets some creatures apart from others as meriting respectful treatment. That is the wrong way to think about the relation between an individual’s characteristics and how he or she may be treated.” 3 Animals are treated as if they are below human beings when they really
