Biology 280L Professor Erika Gehr November 1, 2007 Lab 16: Transformation Purpose Transformation can be defined as the transfer of genetic material contained in naked DNA fragments from a donor cell to a recipient cell (Talaro, 2008). It begins when a group of cells are lysed, or broken apart, through substances such as detergents. These broken up cell fragments containing DNA, usually contain differentiating factors, such as resistant to an antibiotic or inability to synthesize certain amino acids or vitamins, to separate them from the recipient cells (Kleyn & Bicknell, 127). The DNA molecule in each of the lysed cells permanently inserts itself into the recipient organism’s chromosome and permanently alters the genetic make-up. A popular organism used to test for transformation is Acinetobacter . It is always competent, which mean it always accepts naked DNA, unlike most organisms who can only take up naked DNA during specific times.
