This discussion will be woven into the course throughout, but
we’ll get started with an overview of what works and what
doesn’t work so well with mantle convection, plate driving
forces, and plate tectonics.
To begin, we have to let go of the idea that plate tectonics
and mantle convection form a well defined “Unified Theory”.
Much like the elusive Unified Field Theory that frustrates
physicists today, the commonly taught version of plate
tectonics and mantle convection isn’t what it appears.
