John Stracquatanio Morality and War Growing up in the 21 st century you might think that war is a necessary evil that we Americans must endure in order to protect our freedom. With the media bombarding our eyes and ears with either pro or anti war stories, it all gets sort of jumbled up and we come to accept the fact that either way they show it, war is going to be a part of our lives. As if our economy and society isn’t giving us enough to handle on our own turf, we find it morally obligating to interfere with foreign countries affairs. You would think this would bring up the question of ‘What part does morality play in war?’ but so far as I can see we submit to authorities rule like our minds are carriage horses with blinders on, preventing us from looking at it any other way. The focus of my rambling is to reinforce individuality, especially in thought process, and discuss what we as individuals view as morality in war, not view it the way we are told to. First, I think we have to go over moral value of human life. Is one person’s life worth more than another? Just because I live in America, do I inherently become more valuable than a human who is not American, and if so, doesn’t that depend on whether you’re asking another American? So if moral value of human life is not universal, I think we have some skewed values. Nationalism and true morality should not have a correlation, but when you think
