John Stracquatanio Dr. Peterson SGST 208 8 March 2007 Exam 1 1. In Julie Wilgin’s presentation she brought up several points which could relate to the reading “Stereotyping” by Richard Dryer. Dr. Wilgin presented us with many examples of how the “stereotypical” gender would act and what personalities and traits they would portray. Isn’t she only adding to the already stereotyped homosexual society by doing so? Sure, for teaching purposes it could be important to show the different “kinds” of homosexuals and what specifically puts them into which group, but how will we ever come to see the person for who they are if we are taught by putting a group or label on them? A point Richard Dryer brings up is that if we are taught these stereotypes, then we will start to believe and act in the way we are stereotyped to do so. Thus making the stereotype have more validity and harder to overcome. A good friend of mine came out to us in 11 th grade, but we all knew before hand because of the stereotypical way he acted as a homosexual man. He talked in a high pitched voice, was extremely fashionable, and had all around feminine traits and outbursts. If society didn’t portray homosexuals the way it does, would he still have been that way? Or is it just his perception of how a gay should act? Did he decide first that he was gay and then that this was the correct way to act or did he start acting that way first and then decide that he was gay? Lesbian pornography is one of the most degrading and stereotyped forms of film.
