Allison Mickel November 14, 2007 FR SEM: Ethnic Cleansing Reaction Paper: Rape and Ethnic Cleansing Rape is a unique focus in the study of ethnic cleansing as it happens in peacetime as well as in the midst of ethnically-based genocide. Women are mistreated globally, year-round, regardless of ethnic tensions and war conditions. Yet it would be impossible to argue that war does not foster an environment for an extreme degree of rape; Catherine MacKinnon compares the relationship between everyday rape and mass rape to that between the Holocaust and everyday anti-semitism (MacKinnon 186). Perhaps this analogy is an extreme one, but the fact remains that wartime rape is of a completely different magnitude (Nikolic 57). During the Serbian conflicts, women’s concentration camps established for the purpose of rape appear, and during World War II, hundreds of thousands of women are raped in Berlin over the course of a single month (MacKinnon 185; Frusetta 10 Nov.).
