Unformatted text preview: be successful. Functions specify the relationship between inputs and outputs. input function output Functions are represented as black boxes. What’s the difference between objectives and functions? Engineering Engineering Education Function Examples Transportation (product) Education (process) Engineering Engineering Education Why identify Functions? Designer expresses relationships between inputs and outputs independently of the solution Makes it easier to search for solutions with a simple block diagram Allow definition of existing or necessary subsystems so that you can deal with them separately (reduces complexity!) Engineering Engineering Education How to Generate Functions Start with generic problem statement What is the primary function of this artifact? Break apart primary function into sub-functions: Express as verb-noun pair Avoid tying a function to a particular solution make it solution neutral! Ask yourself, “What would happen if ‘it’ suddenly disappeared?” Treat it as a process – follow the flow! Ask yourself, “What happens to this input?” / “Where does this output come from?” Engineering Engineering Education Identifying Objectives & Functions MAKE SURE THAT YOUR OBJECTIVES & FUNCTIONS ARE SOLUTION NEUTRAL Engineering Engineering Education mp3 Player Example Some Objectives & Constraints: O: Portable size & weight C: < 6” in all dimensions O: Easy to use O: Large storage capacity C: Must store > 200 songs O: Durable O: Portable & reusable power source O: Long lasting power source O: Low Cost C: < $75 to make Engineering Engineering Education mp3 Player Example Some Objectives & Constraints: O: Portable size & weight C: < 6” in all dimensions O: Easy to use O: Large storage capacity C: Must store > 200 songs O: Durable O: Portable & reusable power source O: Long lasting power source O: Low Cost C: < $75 to make Functions: Protect from shock Supply Power: Store power Distribute stored power Replenish power Play Music: Store compressed digital music Decode music Output sound Interface with user: Provide means of control Receive user request Process user request Engineering Engineering Education Functional Decomposition: Po...
