Geography 500 1-25-08 Next week start reading Chapter 1 &2 in Birdsall and Chapter 5 in The Middle West Types of regions- Vernacular Instead of boundaries we have transition zones o Boundaries overlap o Inhabitants may live in more than one vernacular region o Me for example: the south, Appalachia, bible belt, “herd” and “mountaineer” nation, the coalfields o Manhattan, KS: Midwest, Plains, Breadbasket of America, Heartland, Flyover country Types of Regions Vernacular regions lack homogeneity found in other types of regions o Based on peoples’ perceptions, not observable traits o NOT just insider perspectives Other Basic Geographic Themes Region is but one of the five themes o Movement o Location o Place o Human Environment Interactoin 5 Themes Movement Interaction between/among humans across space Transportation and communications systems link people and places o Diffusion of cultural traits o Movement of goods/services Diffusion is generally from urban to rural areas
