Messenger 1 “If you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings and films and me, and there I am. There's nothing behind it.” 1 Andy Warhol, in my opinion, sums himself up entirely in this quote. His art is raw and real, which makes his audience either love or hate him. Warhol is a true “take me or leave me” kind of artist. His work is simple, yet each piece is also very complex in meaning. Andy Warhol, born Andrew Warhola, was born on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His parents, Andrej and Julia Warhol, were immigrants from Miková and northeastern Slovakia. When Andy was six, he was diagnosed with chorea, a sometimes fatal disease of the nervous system. When he was eight, Warhol received his first camera at the age of nine and began developing his own film in a darkroom he built in the basement of his home. Andy was said to have dyslexia; however, when he graduated from Schenley High School at age sixteen, Warhol was ranked 51 out of 278 students. In 1942, Warhol’s father, Andrej, died of liver disease, possibly from excessive drinking. Andy refused to attend the funeral, which took place in his own home.
