Neural System HISTORY Past Views: Plato: Located the mind in the head Aristotle: Though the mind was in the heart Franz Gall: Phrenology (skull shape affects our brain functioning; defunct) Current View: Everything psychological is also biological Studying the brain is key We don’t know more than we know (only researching brain for 50ish years, so much we don’t know) BIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGY Branch of psychology concerned with the links between biology and behavior Some biological psychologies call them selves behavioral neuroscientists, neurophysiologies, behavior geneticist, physiological psychologies, or biopyschologists NEURAL COMMUNICATION Each person is a biopsychosocial system Cells-organs-systems-person All work together and interact Bottom-up Nerve cells interact with environment/culture Top-down Out thoughts influence our neural communication NUERON What is it? A nerve cell; basic building block of nervous system Many different types, but all have same basic parts Parts: 1. Cell body – cell’s life-support center
