3/18/08 The Life and Ministry of Jesus No original texts of New Testament 350 CE – The last time they had full texts 27 Books in New Testament Gospels – 4 o Synoptic – to look from same view, structures are similar Matthew Mark Luke o John History – 1 Epistles (letters) – 21 Apocalyptic – 1 Synoptic Problem is often referred to that way because Mark is supposedly the first of the gospels, not Matthew The Gospel of Mark - Authors of Matthew and Luke had access to his texts o They followed his structure - Much of Mark can be found in Matthew and Luke Mark Q M – Matthew Luke – L Mark and Luke both have own unique material, material from Mark, and material from who knows where – Q Gospel - Translated as “good news” - Word in Greek is “evangelism” - Celebration announcement have historical information in them, but not written in Greco-Roman style o Are they Biographies? Long time said “no” o Called bios by some scholars because they speak of heroes, but don’t speak or every detail Proclamation - Include history and biographies o Included history to support the proclamations
