Religion 1310: Christian Scriptures Section 10: CRN 10891 Tuesday, Thursday @ 8:00 a.m. Tidwell 101 Spring 2008 Eric Holleyman, Ph.D. The course is an introduction to the history, religion, literature, and text of the Bible. Emphasis is placed on the history of ancient Israel, principal themes of major Old Testament texts, the historical development of the Old and New Testaments, the historical background of the New Testament, the life of Jesus Christ, and the development of the early church. Special regard will be given to the Christian teachings found in the Bible, particularly as its historical background illuminates them and as these teachings are shaped by its literary content. The procedures and presentations of the course will conform to the philosophy, spirit, and requirements of Baylor University and its Department of Religion. Textbook Required: The New Oxford Annotated Bible: New Revised Standard Version with the Apocrypha. A total of four review quizzes will be administered. Each quiz will cover information emphasized in class since the previous quiz or exam. The quiz point total will constitute 8% of the student’s course grade.

Four exams will be administered during the semester. The first two exams will be focused primarily on materials associated with the Old Testament. The last two exams will be focused primarily on materials associated with the New Testament. Each section in the course builds on the material in the previous sections. Therefore, in addition to the primary focus noted above, some comprehensive questions will be included on each exam. The weight of each exam (percentage and point total) is noted in the previous grid. When an exam is missed Dr. Holleyman must be contacted with a valid
