What is the function of the farrowing crate for sows AND how does it fit into the health management of swine? The function of a farrowing crate for sows is to keep the sow in a state or relative immobility to keep her from making any sudden moves or drops to ensure that she will not lay on and kill any of her piglets. This is important considering that 47% of all deaths in young swine are a result of crushing. The way a farrowing crate fits into the health management of swine is that it keeps mortality rates down and also allows us to individually feed each sow in to her exact need of daily nutrient requirements and feed requirements. 2. What can swine farmers do to curb pre-weaning piglet mortality? There several assorted methods to curb pre-weaning piglet mortality. Sow condition is a major aspect to look at when trying to curb this mortality
