Thomas had written this poem after his father died and this poem explores various themes like death, life and aging. This essay deals with the prominent themes and arguments of the poem to have a full understanding of the points put forward by the poet. One of the most prominent of themes of the poem is the theme of life and death that has been explored by the metaphor of light and darkness. Here, in Do Not Go Gentle into that Night, good night” refers to death because the long sleep of the night is associated by the long sleep of the that comes with death. The poet further juxtaposes darkness with light which symbolizes the light of life since light is opposite to darkness or night. So, the poet in his poem urges everyone to not go easy on death and to fight death in every possible way.
