Factoring Problems from page 345-346 As I have “T” as the third letter in my last name, I need to do Problems 64 and 92 from page 345-346 and problem 56 from page 353. Factoring with Two Variables Factor each polynomial. 1. 12 m 2 n 2 − 8 mn + 1 12 m 2 n 2 − 8 mn + 1 We have a trinomial here. We need two numbers that add to -8 but multiply to 12. We try with -2 and -6. 12 m 2 n 2 − 6 mn − 2 mn + 1 Four terms means start with grouping 6 mn (2 mn – 1) – 1(2 mn – 1) The common factor for each group is (2 mn – 1) (6 mn -1)(2 mn -1) This works, check by multiplying it back together. Now it is completely factored . Factoring Completely Factor each polynomial completely. Use the methods discussed in Sections 5.1 through 5.3. If the polynomial is prime say so. 92. w 3 −3 w 2 −18w
