Melissa Fattorusso Professor Datema Comp II Joyce Carol Oates wrote the short story “Where are you going and where have you been?” following the three murders committed by Charles Schmid of Tucson, Arizona. Charles was an insecure yet charismatic loner who was suspended from high school for stealing and never returned. The girls he dated were magnetized to him and his confidence. In 1966 was convicted for murdering 2 of his girls and one of their sisters. Oates dedicated the story to Bob Dylan after listening to his song “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue”. The story begins introducing Connie, a beautiful young girl who is aware of her beauty. She is at home on summer vacation from school. Connie exhibits the typical behavior of a teenage girl, playing the role of a daughter at home and a friend preoccupied with music, her looks, and boys. Joyce writes that “everything about her had two sides to it, one for home and one for anywhere that was not home.” At home, Connie appeases her mother and stays out of sight of her watchful eyes by doing activities that
