Jonathan Jaklitsch Anthropology 143 1/22/08 Essay 1 Basically I am the definition of a “mutt”—the ancestors on my father’s side of the family represented a large portion of Eastern Europe, including, Austria, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Belarus, while most of my ancestors on my mother’s side of the family originated from Ireland. I have lived in the United States all my life and so have my parents and my grandparents on both sides of the family. My last relative to immigrate to the United States was my great grandmother Ingrid, who did so around 1900. Supposedly she was a famous cross country skier earlier when she was younger. I do not know much about my family’s history, but there are two interesting stories that I do know that always seem to pop up at family reunions. The first story involves the origin of my surname—Jaklitsch. Supposedly, the first ancestors on my father’s side of the family originated in Austria and had the surname Jaklit. When they moved to a certain town named Litsch, all the citizens were required to add an –sch
