Many actually require more energy to produce than can be obtained, thus requiring fossil fuel inputs. While this allows for CO2 savings of 20- 70%, it does not eliminate net CO2 output altogether. The only reason this is financially viable is through government subsidies and mandates on biofuel produc4on; such as provided under the U.S. Energy Policy Act of 2005. Although biofuels s4ll only cons4tute a minor frac4on of fuel consump4on, they make a measurable impact on food produc4on by compe4ng for agricultural space. This conflict limits the possible extent to which biofuels will be able to replace fossil fuels.
