Net ecosystem producOon (NEP) is the net accumulaOon of carbon by an ecosystem – all the organic carbon produced by photosynthesis (GPP) that was not used by the respiraOon of autotrophs (Ra – same as respiraOon of plants) or the respiraOon of heterotrophs that feed on plants or decaying organic ma_er (Rh). The world’s soils and peat contain vast quanOOes of organic carbon. Land use changes, including deforestaOon and Olling release some of this carbon.
