Unformatted text preview: aged net effect of human acAviAes since 1750 has been one of warming, with a net radiaAve forcing of +1.6 W m- 2. DIRECT OBSERVATIONS OF RECENT CLIMATE CHANGE Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observaAons of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melAng of snow and ice, and rising global average sea level. IPCC, 2007 The observed pa_erns of warming, including greater warming over land than over the ocean, and their changes over Ome, are only simulated by models that include anthropogenic forcing. The ability of coupled climate models to simulate the observed temperature evoluOon on each of six conOnents provides strong evidence of human influence on climate. Model esAmates of 20th century climate with: Natural forcing only Natural + Anthropogenic Forcing What are the projecOons for the future? Why is the topic of climate change so controversial? What are the consequences of global climate change? Why be concerned? Warming of the oceans and ocean acidificaOon due to released CO2 are two of many contribuOng causes to...
