Fall13 - ENGRI-1190 Problem Set #4 Due: Wednesday, November 20th, 2013 by 5pm. NOTE: Please answer in complete sentences where necessary! ANSWER KEY – Out of 35 points. I – Rough vs. smooth surfaces, Protein adsorption, and Cells (20 pts) To study the correlation between roughness, wettability, cell adhesion, and cell migration, Lampin et al. prepared poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) substrates with varying roughness by sandblasting. They then determined the contact angles of several different solvents on the smooth and rough PMMA substrates. In addition, the contact angles on these surfaces were measured before and after exposure to a nutrient mixture (with proteins) used for cell culture. Their results are presented below: Material Water Diiodomethane Glycerol Ethylene Glycol PMMA 62 ± 5 38 ± 1.6 64 ± 1.5 48 ± 1.7 PMMA+proteins 6 ± 1.8 40 ± 3.4 46 ± 4.0 9 ± 2.5 PMMA rough 102 ± 4.2 18 ± 3.7 99 ± 5 37 ± 3.6 PMMA rough + proteins 7 ± 2.7 46 ± 2.7 37 ± 4.3 13 ± 2.0 Taken from: J. Biomed. Mater. Res. , 1997 , 36 , 99-108.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
