Attica Hero: Theseus Area controlled by Athens Autochthonous – Athenian people thought they had always been there Cecrops – first king Ericthonius – child of Athena/Hephaestus/Gaea; later king King Aegeus doesn’t have a male heir, consults the oracle o Oracle: “don’t uncork the swelling wine skin until you come to the height of the Athenians” metaphor o Goes to a wise friend who arranged to have his daughter, Aethra, sleep with Aegeus, she gets pregnant Aegeus leaves sandals and a sword under a rock and tells Aethra that if the child can lift the rock and retrieve the items, then he should come and find him o Around the same, Poseidon sleeps with her Theseus grows up, gets the sword/sandals and goes to find his father o Wants to travel and kill monsters like Heracles o Deed has to be done Sinis – man with a problem; fastens people to pine trees, pulls the tree back and then releases it; Theseus kills him by this method Sciron – asks people to wash his feet and when the bend over he kicks
