Demeter Roman: Ceres Has an affair with Zeus and Persephone is born Goddess of grain, crops, wheat, agriculture (Ceres = cereal) Ended savagery of mortals Gave fig its sweetness Poseidon raped her and the first horse was born Daughter, Persephone, married to Hades o Hades sees her and wants her for his wife o Goes to Zeus and asks for Persephone Knows Demeter won’t like this Doesn’t say yes or no, suggests that Hades just kidnap her o Persephone is out one day and sees a really pretty flower and as she bends to pick it, Hades takes her to the underworld o Demeter can’t find Persephone, Hecate and Helius saw the abduction and tell Demeter Demeter gets very angry at the incident and Zeus’ obvious involvement o Demeter abandons Mt. Olympus and goes to Eleusis 4 women ask her is she is ok, Demeter says she is an escaped prisoner of Crete pirates, asks them for work Happen to be the daughters of the King, their mother just had a son
