How proteins fold relates to the water environment. Orders of Protein Structure • Primary – Sequence of amino acids – Determined by DNA code – Peptide bonds - covalent • Higher order structure based on interactions between amino acids in sequence – Secondary – interactions between peptide bonds • Specifically H-bonds between elements of peptide bonds – Tertiary – interactions between amino acid side chains Secondary Structure Based On Hydrogen Bonds • Between groups in the peptide bonds • Two major classes of secondary structure: α-helices and β-pleated sheets N = Blue α C=black carbonyl C = gray O = red α Helix Orders of Protein Structure • Primary – Sequence of amino acids – Determined by DNA code – Peptide bonds - covalent • Higher order structure based on interactions...
