Amanda Naeemi JOUR175 Owning the Media? Try the Media Owning Us! Media ownership has been a huge topic for the Federal Communications Commission. The FCC has been pushing a wave of deregulation of media ownership onto American society, yet society does not wish to go along with this idea. Mark Cooper's text “Media Ownership and Democracy in the Digital Information Age,” raises several valuable points against media ownership. The introduction to the book outlines point-by-point what makes allowing enormous conglomerations to own various media outlets in a market wrong. Over the course of this introduction, Cooper shows how by concentrating media owners, those who own the media will control, and furthermore limit, what we are exposed to. By Chairman Powell's standards, it is acceptable to have one large company own several television broadcast stations, radio stations, newspapers, and even Internet service providers in a market.
