Realism – States should pursue own interests o Cooperation is risky – do so when it benefits you. o Relative gains  are more important o Zero-sum game o Econ: each state should protect its own economic interests Focus is on relative wealth   wealth is state power Economics serves politics, or military goals Think about conflicting interests More likely to have protectionists policies Gov’t policy should create favorable terms of trade   surplus Liberalisms – Despite anarchy, co-op is possible o Int’l orgs o Norms make co-op easier o Absolute gains more important o Positive sum game o Econ: Supports free trade Co-op is beneficial, helped by int’l organizations More interested in long-term benefits Focus on shared interests Efficiency of the market
