Great Britain and France are allies of Russia (Triple Entente Agreement) Great Britain & France declare war on Germany Central Powers- Triple alliance, except Italy and Allies Allied Powers- Triple entente and allies (France, GB, Russia…) Deep seeded rivalries (GB, France, Germany, Russia, US.) c. Trench warfare: a lot of death with little results d. Woodrow Wilson refuses to bring US into war. e. 1915 – Germany sinks the Lusitania (causes death of 128 Americans) call for US to get involved f. Zimmerman telegram – possible plan in which Mexico is encouraged to attack United States g. United States declares war in 1917. Woodrow Wilson coins the “war for democracy. h. By late 1918, US sends 100,000-200,000 troops/month. WWI- 1914- November 11, 1918 a. Many died for no results- the division lines between allies and central powers moved continuously back and forth. b. Trench warfare c. Woodrow Wilson is president- didn’t want to be involved with war. d. US’s private banks are loaning $$ to GB- want GB to win. e. US’s private companies support GB and France through supplies f. Submarine Warfare- Germany was 1 st to use in effective way. g. 1915- o German sub sunk GB’s boat (passenger vessel). Boat exploded. May have been full of explosives in transport. Killed Americans.
