1/25/08 Strain theories : merton, cohen, cloward, agnew General strain theory – micro-level theory o Negative affective states: negative emotional states that lead to deviance. Ex : depression, anger, fear Sources of strain: o Failure to achieve positive goals ( merton ) o Presence of negative stimuli – something bad. Ex: child abuse, conflicts, etc. o Removal of something positive – ex : moving away Control theories : written by hirschi Said it was not why people are deviant by it’s why we conform. He said people are hedonistic and questioned why people aren’t more hedonistic We conform because of a social bond. It’s the social bond that gives society control. The stronger the bond, the more control society has over you because the more you have to lose 4 elements: o Attachment : emotional element of social bond. The stronger the attachment, the more likely youre going to conform o Involvement : energy allocation. The more time and energy you spend on conventional things then the less time you will have to be deviant
