Joseph Yu Ms. Aichele English 11 Honors 9 Jan 2014 Tan's Rebirth In The Kitchen God's Wife by Amy Tan, Pearl, the daughter of a traditional Chinese mother, is brought along a journey through her mother's memories. Her mother, Winnie, wishes to tell her daughter of her own past so that she may reveal a secret she had been holding from her for several decades. After hearing her mother's tale, Pearl is able to sympathize with her mother and grows more tolerant of her culture. The two become closer than ever and even decide to travel to China. Amy Tan had a similar change of character in her own life of which she came to embrace her mother's love and Asian heritage, leading to the creation of The Kitchen God's Wife . Amy's acceptance must have first sprouted from feelings of revulsion. Tan's initial distaste of her mother's love and Asian culture was prevalent throughout her childhood and even parts of her early adulthood. "As a child Amy Tan believed her life was duller than most. She read to escape. Her parents wanted her to become a concert pianist. She secretly dreamed of becoming an artist. She began writing fiction when she was 33" ("About" par. 1).
