Course Overview This note summarizes the objectives of Econ 131a, provides administrative information, and describes course requirements. The accompanying Course Outline lists the material to prepare for each class meeting. Econ 131 is’a’second -year’course’in’econometrics’covering’probability,’statis tics,’and’linear’ regression.’ The’first’half’of’the’course’and’much’of’the’second’draws’heavily’on’a’course’ developed’by’Professor’C.’Lanier’Benkard. ’ ’ My’goal’is’to’teach’you’how’to’evaluate’quantitative’information,’and’to’use’data’to’answer’ quantitative’questions’in’the’social’scien ces.’The’course’covers’three’main’areas:’ 1. The’±rst’area,’ probability ,’provides’a’foundation’for’modeling’uncertainties,’such’as’the’ uncertainties’faced’by’±nancial’investors’or’insurers.’We’will’study’the’mechanics’of’ probability’(manipulating’some’probabi lities’to’get’others)’and’the’use’of’probability’to’ make’judgments’about’uncertain’events.’ 2. The’second’area,’ statistics ,’provides’techniques’for’interpreting’data,’such’as’the’data’a’ marketing’department’might’have’on’consumer’purchases.’Sta tistical’metho ds’permit’ us’to’use’small’amounts’of’information’(such’as’the’number’of’people’switching’from’ Verizon’to’AT&T’in’an’iPhone’test’market ing’program)’to’answer’larger’questions’ (what’would’AT&T²s’new’market’share’be’if’the’iPhone’is’launched’nationally’and’ exclusively’by’AT&T?)’ ’
