Unformatted text preview: Purgatory , Canto 30: What does Beatrice think about the way that Dante has been leading his life? She speaks very harshly to him, telling him that he has wasted his god given talent, by not writing about important things and instead focusing on worldly fame. She also lets him know that he “abandoned” her after she died. We are not sure what this abandonment entails, it could be not praying for her soul, pursuing other women, or just not thinking of her as much as he should after she passed away. This is interesting for her to scold him so harshly upon greeting him for the first time because it mirrors the attitude of Cato, who we first encountered in Canto 1. Purgatory is a very stern place indeed....
