Overview This module examines accounting for pensions. While many accounting students think that accounting for pensions is a complex topic, it isn’t! Accounting for pensions is a very straightforward process. Under a pension plan, an employer provides benefits to employees after they retire. Two common types of pension plans are: (1) defined contribution plans, and (2) defined benefit plans. Both are described later in this module. Pensions are covered in Chapter 19 of your textbook. The sections on other post-retirement benefit plans (throughout the chapter, but particularly page 1261 of the textbook) are assigned as reading only and provide you with a brief overview of other post-retirement benefit plans, the nature of the plans, how to account for these benefits, and how accounting for those plans compares to accounting for pensions. Post-retirement benefits are not core course material and are not examinable. Module 6: Pensions and Other. .. Topics There are three topics in this module: Topic 1: Overview of Accounting for Pensions Topic 2: Accounting for Pensions Topic 3: IFRS and GAAP Comparison Module 6: Pensions and Other. .. Activities This module should take you two weeks to complete. By the end of Week 9, you should have completed the following activities, including submitting Assignment 6 to your Open Learning Faculty Member.
