Exam 2 Answer Key 1. In the Patch Hypothesis of membrane repair, a tear in the membrane leads to influx of extracellular Ca2+ and release of intracellular Ca2+ stores. This leads to two events, Ca2+ stimulated breakdown of the actin cortical network and chaotic fusion of intracellular vesicles, which provide membrane that can fuse with the damaged plasma membrane. If EGTA is added, Ca2+ will not be available, the vesicles will not fuse to form large vesicles and they cannot reach the plasma membrane because the actin cortex will be intact. The damaged cells will die. 2.
