Like most orthodontists, he attempts to make a perfect bite for every patient. Not all patients will have the same procedures done when getting braces. Some children come in at the age of 7 to monitor growth and development. Not all patients will come in at the age of 7 even though the American Association of Orthodontists recommends it. There are two phases of treatment. The first phase, which not everyone goes through, is when the orthodontist encourages jaw growth and may also need to refer him or her to a dentist to have permanent teeth extracted. The goal is to have a jaw size that will accommodate all the permanent teeth. Children will sometimes need a palate expander to widen then maxilla so that the bottom and upper teeth will fit together better. Some might also need a space maintainer if a primary tooth was lost too soon.
